Stockpile Volume From the Air: When a Wheel Loader Estimate Isn’t Enough

Stockpile volume measurement from the air beats loader guesses for quarry, aggregate, and earthwork inventory. Consistent method for month-end reports.

If your month-end inventory still starts with “the loader guy said about…,” you already know the problem. Loader estimates are fast. They are also generous on a good day, inconsistent between shifts, and hard to defend when a buyer, auditor, or joint-venture partner asks how you got the number.

Stockpile volume measurement from a drone is not technology theater. It is a repeatable surface model of the pile—same method next month, same comparison baseline, fewer arguments in the scale house trailer.

Where loader estimates quietly fail you

Different operators “see” different shapes on the same pile. Toe lines get buried under track traffic. Crests get rounded in someone’s head. Multiple materials on one pad blur into one number that somehow still makes the spreadsheet balance. After a rainy week, wet bulk and dry bulk get confused in conversation even when the ticket system pretends they are the same commodity.

None of that means your crew is careless. It means the method has no geometry. Geometry is what aerial capture—and consistent base definitions—adds. Without that, every inventory meeting becomes a negotiation about memory instead of a review of process.

What an aerial volume pass actually measures

Photogrammetry or LiDAR builds a three-dimensional surface of the stockpile. You define a base plane or toe surface. Software computes volume relative to that base. Change the base definition and the number moves—so the base is part of the method, not a footnote you hide in an email chain.

For quarry, aggregate, and earthwork yards, the useful deliverable is usually:

  • Volume by pile (and by material when piles are separated cleanly)
  • Orthomosaic for visual audit—so someone who was not on site can see what was measured
  • Comparison to last month’s surface when you fly on a cadence
  • Clear notes on density assumptions if you convert volume to tonnage later (that conversion is yours or your lab’s—not something a drone invents)

That comparison is the real product. One absolute number is interesting. A trend built the same way every time is something finance and ops can both live with.

Photogrammetry vs. denser data

Most open piles with clear toes work fine with high-overlap imagery. Dense vegetation on toes, very dark materials, deep shadows, or complex multi-pile pads can push you toward LiDAR or a hybrid approach. The sensor brand is not the point. Whether the surface model actually represents the material you are selling or moving is the point.

Ask how ground control or check points are handled. Ask how toes are drawn. Ask whether last month’s surface is archived so this month’s delta means something. Those questions separate a serious inventory flight from a pretty flyover with a cubic-yard number stapled on.

Licensed surveying boundary (plain language)

We supply the dense surface they need; they seal what the jurisdiction and contract require. Saying that up front avoids awkward scope fights later.

Typical field scenario (generic)

A regional aggregate yard flies piles at month-end. Same naming convention. Same toe rules. Ops compares totals to sales tickets and scale house data. Gaps get investigated as process issues—not “who guessed wrong in the cab.” Over a few cycles, the yard stops arguing about the inventory number and starts managing the process that produces it.

That is the bar. Not magic accuracy theater. Process you can audit when a customer or partner asks for the method, not just the headline yards.

What to send when you request a quote

Pile count and approximate footprints help more than a vague “we have some rock.” Material types matter if piles sit close together. Tell us whether you need a one-time baseline or a month-end cadence, and whether anyone downstream expects a sealed survey product. Construction earthwork volumes often sit next to mapping and survey and site scouting before dirt moves; quarry inventory is the same geometry skill aimed at the pad you already operate.
