Photogrammetry for Construction Sites: Ortho, Point Cloud, and What to Ask For

Photogrammetry for construction sites: what orthos, point clouds, and DSMs are for—and what GCs should ask for before the flight.

General contractors do not need another vendor pitching “3D magic.” They need to know which photogrammetry products answer which jobsite questions—and which requests waste money. Photogrammetry for construction sites is deliverable literacy: ortho, point cloud, DSM/DTM, and the questions to ask before anyone launches.

Start with the decision, not the acronym

Are you checking layout against design? Tracking earthwork? Measuring a stockpile? Briefing an owner who will never open a LAS file? Each answer points to a different primary product. Buying every product “just in case” creates folders nobody opens and invoices nobody can defend.

Orthomosaic: the map everyone understands

A georeferenced orthomosaic is the top-down site photo corrected for camera tilt and (within limits) terrain so measurements in X/Y are meaningful when control is solid. Superintendents use it for laydown, haul roads, and trade coordination. PMs use it for status. It is usually the first file anyone opens.

Ask for: coordinate system matching your civil package, ground sample distance appropriate to the questions (tighter for rebar-scale curiosity is rarely worth it), and a viewing method your field staff will actually use.

Point cloud: dense XYZ for geometry nerds

A photogrammetric point cloud is a mass of colored points reconstructed from overlapping photos. Engineers and survey technicians use it to extract features, check clearances, and feed modeling workflows. Most supers will not live in the point cloud—and that is fine.

Ask for: density expectations, classification if any (often limited compared to LiDAR), and whether the cloud is relative or tied to control. Also ask whether LiDAR would be smarter under canopy; photos cannot invent ground they cannot see.

DSM and DTM: surfaces for dirt conversations

A digital surface model includes tops of piles, equipment, and structures. A digital terrain model aims at bare earth. Earthwork conversations care which one you were handed. Mixing them up is how bad quantity arguments start.

Ask for: how vegetation and equipment were handled, what base was used for volumes, and check-point stats when quantities matter contractually.

What to ask before the flight (GC checklist)

  1. What decision does this capture support this week?
  2. Who opens the file—superintendent, PE, PLS, owner?
  3. What coordinate system and vertical datum match the drawings?
  4. Is control already on site, or do we need to set/check points?
  5. Cadence: one-off for a claim, or weekly monitoring?
  6. Does any contract language require a sealed survey product? If yes, involve your PLS; aerial data supports them—it does not replace their stamp.

Practical notes before you book

Share the decision you need to make, not just a request for “drone photos.” Acreage or building footprint, deadline, coordinate system preferences, and whether a licensed surveyor or engineer is already on the project all change how we scope capture and processing. If access, weather, or active operations constrain the window, say so early so the flight plan matches the site you actually have—not the site on last year’s drawing.

Clear communication on those points keeps the deliverable useful the week you receive it, not just impressive in a slide deck.

Field realities that affect quality

Sites are not laboratories. Wind, heat shimmer, standing water, active equipment, and last-minute access changes all show up in real capture windows. A professional crew plans around those constraints instead of pretending every flight looks like a demo reel. When conditions force a compromise, the deliverable notes should say so—so nobody treats a compromised surface like a sealed truth.

Communication before the flight prevents most of that drama. Gate codes, escort rules, and “do not fly over that tank farm” notes belong in the kickoff, not in a text message after batteries are already hot.
