Orthomosaic Accuracy: What “Survey Grade” Does and Doesn’t Mean

Orthomosaic accuracy explained: what “survey grade” marketing means, what checkpoints prove, and why drone maps are not a PLS boundary survey.

“Survey grade” is one of the most abused phrases in drone marketing. It shows up on quotes for construction orthos, real-estate flyovers, and everything in between—often without a single checkpoint residual or a clear statement of coordinate system. If you are a GC, PE, or owner who has been burned by a pretty map that does not fit the civil set, you already know the hangover.

Here is the straight version of orthomosaic accuracy: what the words should mean, what actually drives error, and what still belongs to a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.

What an orthomosaic is good at

A well-controlled orthomosaic is a scaled, georeferenced top-down image mosaic. Used correctly, it supports progress monitoring, planimetric takeoffs within stated tolerances, communication with owners, and a visual base for markup. Pair it with a dense surface model and you can talk cut/fill and stockpile volumes under documented base rules.

It is not automatically a sealed topographic survey. It is not a boundary. It does not become “survey grade” because the drone had RTK or the brochure said so.

What actually drives accuracy

  • Control and check points: Ground control (or a rigorous PPK/RTK workflow with independent checks) is how you prove horizontal and vertical performance—not vendor adjectives.
  • Coordinate system and datum: If the ortho is in the wrong CRS or geoid, it will not land on your civil drawings no matter how sharp it looks.
  • GSD and overlap: Flight design affects detail and reconstruction quality.
  • Surface type: Vegetation, shiny roofs, and moving equipment create holes and soft geometry that accuracy stats can hide if you only check open pavement.

Ask for checkpoint residuals in the project CRS. If a provider cannot show checks, treat “survey grade” as advertising.

What “survey grade” should mean (when used honestly)

At minimum: a stated accuracy target, a documented control/check methodology, reported residuals, and a clear product purpose (engineering surface / progress ortho / volume base)—plus an explicit note that sealed surveys still require a PLS where the law or contract demands one.

This is large-photogrammetry education as much as a local service pitch. Whether your pad is in Springdale or your corridor job sits farther out, the same accuracy hygiene applies. How to write the RFP line

State CRS and vertical datum. Require independent check points and residual reporting. Separate “progress ortho for PM communication” from “design surface for quantities” from “sealed survey deliverable.” Budget the PLS when you need a seal. Name who owns each folder.

RTK/PPK myths

RTK or PPK on the aircraft improves the trajectory. It does not abolish the need for independent check points if you are making accuracy claims. Treating rover fixes as proof of map accuracy is how projects inherit silent bias. Ask for checks on hard, well-defined points your civil team recognizes.

When photogrammetry is enough

Open commercial pads with good control often do not need LiDAR. Save LiDAR for canopy, corridor brush, and true bare-earth problems. Accuracy literacy includes choosing the right sensor—not buying the most expensive adjective.

How we talk about products at Drones Inbound

We say “progress ortho,” “engineering surface,” or “volume base” with method notes. We avoid “survey grade” unless the scope literally includes documented control, checks, and a stated accuracy target—and even then we remind clients that seals belong to a PLS. Large photogrammetry projects deserve adult language. Your drawings deserve the same.
