Photogrammetry needs to see the ground. Under thick canopy, brushy corridors, or multi-layer timber, photos stitch a beautiful tree-top surface and leave the dirt you care about as holes or smooth guesswork. That is the problem LiDAR mapping is hired to solve: laser pulses that penetrate gaps in vegetation and return a point cloud with ground classified separately from canopy.
If your grading quantities, ditch lines, or corridor profiles depend on bare earth—and the site is still green—photos alone are the wrong primary tool. Hiring more photo flights will not invent ground returns the camera never saw.
Where photos alone fail on real jobs
Hardwood draws and pine stands can produce an orthomosaic that looks continuous while the digital surface model is mostly treetops. Utility and road corridors with mixed brush hide ditch lines and toe of slope. Pre-development tracts need cut-and-fill numbers that reflect dirt, not leafy canopy. Sites after leaf-on season cannot always wait for leaf-off without blowing a bid schedule or a financing window.
RGB still matters for context, exhibits, and stakeholder communication. LiDAR matters when the engineering question is “what does the ground do under that green?” Many projects use both: LiDAR for ground, imagery for the story you show the owner.
What a LiDAR deliverable typically includes
A professional package usually covers a classified point cloud (ground, vegetation, and optionally buildings or noise classes); a bare-earth digital terrain model (DTM); an optional canopy height model for clearing or timber conversations; contours or breakline candidates for your civil team to refine; and metadata on point density, flight parameters, and control used.
Ask for check-point residuals. Ask how aggressive ground classification is under partial canopy. “LiDAR” on an invoice is not the same as a usable bare-earth surface for design. Specify coordinate system and vertical datum up front so the file lands in your engineer’s template without a painful conversion week.
Licensed surveying boundary—said plainly
Drones Inbound is not a licensed land surveying firm. We produce aerial and geospatial data that licensed surveyors and engineers work from. Boundary surveys, sealed topographic surveys, ALTA work, and legal descriptions still require a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) where state law and your contract demand them.
We are the dense capture layer in that chain—not the stamp. When a PLS or PE is already on the job, our role is to give them denser, more current surfaces than walking every line under brush would allow on the schedule you have. That division of labor is normal and healthy; blurring it creates liability for everyone.
Control, accuracy, and expectations
Accuracy is a system: aircraft trajectory, sensor calibration, ground control or independent check points, and classification quality. Typical field use looks like this (generic scenario): a civil firm needs grading quantities on a wooded pad before dirt moves. Photos would understate cut under trees. A LiDAR ground class gives the engineer a surface they can design against—then the PLS seals what the jurisdiction requires for the official survey product.
Corridors add another wrinkle: linear control, overlapping flight lines, and vegetation that changes week to week. Plan capture windows with the engineer’s submittal dates, not just the pilot’s weather preference. Brush that grew since the last flight is not a software bug—it is a field reality you schedule around.

How to prepare for the flight
A smoother job starts with a few basics on your side. Confirm site access and any locked gates. Share a simple sketch or KMZ of the area of interest if you have one. Note nearby obstacles, occupied buildings, or active equipment that should stay out of the flight window. If weather or operations force a reschedule, say so early—capture quality beats a forced flight on a bad day.
