Dense Forest LiDAR: Ground Models When Photogrammetry Can’t See Through

Forest LiDAR mapping builds bare-earth ground models where photogrammetry only sees canopy—DTM-focused capture for engineers and site teams.

I have watched enough photo-only “surfaces” over timbered tracts to know the tell: smooth canopy looking like gentle hills, drainage lies that vanish when you walk the creek, and cut/fill numbers that only work if trees are dirt. Photogrammetry is excellent on open pads. In dense forest, it mostly measures the tops of leaves.

Dense forest LiDAR is how we get ground models when photos cannot see through. The point of the flight is not a pretty point cloud for a slide deck. It is a classified bare-earth DTM your engineer can trust enough to design against—or at least trust enough to know where boots and a PLS still need to finish the job.

DTM first (this post’s emphasis)

Batch conversations sometimes blur “dense sites” with canopy mapping. Here the priority is explicit: ground. Digital terrain model. Bare earth. The returns that made it through gaps in the canopy, classified and surfaced so grading, drainage, and access conversations start from dirt—not from treetops mislabeled as topography.

Canopy height products are useful add-ons for clearing estimates. They are not the headline when the PE asked for ground.

When we recommend LiDAR over photos

  • Timbered development tracts and wooded campus expansions
  • Sites where drainage under canopy drives detention and road design
  • Pre-grade planning where photo DSMs have failed you before
  • Mixed corridor/site jobs where brush hides the surface between open pockets

If the tract is mostly open with a thin tree line, say so. We will not upsell LiDAR for sport.

Licensing and honesty

Drones Inbound is not a licensed land surveying firm. Forest LiDAR data supports engineers and surveyors. It does not replace a Professional Land Surveyor for boundaries, monumentation, or sealed topo products. On wooded sites, that line matters even more—because a beautiful DTM can tempt someone to treat it like a finished survey. Do not. Use it as dense data in a proper professional workflow.

Far-field is OK for this lane

LiDAR is one of the services we will travel for when the vegetation problem justifies it. Everyday core work still centers on Northwest Arkansas, Joplin / SW Missouri, NE Oklahoma, and SE Kansas—but forest ground models are not limited to “only if we are already in town.”

What you should receive

Classified point cloud with ground / non-ground, bare-earth DTM, metadata on density and checks, CRS/datum stated plainly, optional CHM for clearing. Notes on areas of low ground penetration where classification confidence drops—because honesty about holes beats a fake continuous surface.

After the timber comes down

The forest DTM often becomes the pre-grade baseline. Once clearing starts, photogrammetry may take over for weekly earthwork maps on the open surface. Starting with LiDAR under canopy avoids inheriting a fantasy surface into the grading model.

Mixed canopy reality

Few tracts are uniformly dense. Expect variable ground-penetration confidence and ask for it to be mapped or noted. A continuous-looking DTM with silent holes is worse than a product that admits where classification thinned out.

Field notes

Leaf-on vs. leaf-off changes penetration. Steep hollows and evergreen thickets challenge every sensor. Check points in openings still matter. Tell us about hunting leases, locked gates, and creek crossings before we plan ground control. Related site-scouting and earthwork mapping can follow once the trees come down—but the first win is knowing what the ground is doing under the timber you have today.

How this fits the rest of the job

Aerial data only helps when someone opens it the same week. Name the decision owner—O&M lead, superintendent, ranch manager, plant accountant—before the flight so the deliverable format matches how they work. Gate codes, escort rules, and “do not fly” zones belong in kickoff. If weather slips the window, we would rather reschedule than deliver a compromised product dressed up as certainty.
